Sitting on the Canal du Midi, a UNESCO world heritage site, the town has exceptional architectural heritage and is reflected in the Grand Bassin located between the St Roch locks (4 levels) and the old bridge. The Grand Bassin is an excellent spot for walks. Nestled between the trees and the water, it offers walkers a wonderful view over the town.
Find out moreThe Lauragais plains region has been very busy since the Neolithic period. It sat on one of the tin trade routes and then Aquitaine’s Roman road. Castelnaudary entered the history books in 1118 under the name Castellum Novum Arri, which means Arri’s new castle.
A highly strategic location during the crusade against the Cathars, it enjoyed rapid growth between the 12th and 14th century before being burnt down during the Hundred Years War. This period saw the birth of cassoulet!
