Carcassonne

A day trip from Castelnaudary

Carcassonne is 43.7 kilometres from Le Clos Fleuri – a 34-minute drive or about twenty minutes by TER. It’s the most obvious day trip from Castelnaudary – and the one everyone misses, arriving at 11 am when the coaches are already there.
The only advice that matters can be summed up in a single line: set off at 8.15 am and be at the Porte Narbonnaise by 9 am. At 9 am, the ramparts are empty; by 11 am, they’re not. This is precisely the advantage of staying 34 minutes away rather than in the town itself: you arrive before the crowds rather than being caught up in them, and you return in the evening to a quiet town.
Three kilometres of ramparts, 52 towers, a double enclosure, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 — and a restoration project led by Viollet-le-Duc from 1853 onwards that has been the subject of debate for 170 years. These articles cover the full itinerary, visiting the Cité, parking, days when it rains, family outings and the wine route.
