The Canal du Midi by bike: the finest routes around Castelnaudary

Cyclotourisme sur le canal du Midi au départ de Castelnaudary

The Canal du Midi is the easiest cycling terrain in the region: no cars, no climbing. The towpath starts 3 minutes from Le Clos Fleuri. Here are four routes, from the shortest to the most demanding, with real distances and the state of the surface — because that is what makes the difference between a good ride and a puncture.

Start: the Grand Bassin, 1.9 km from the hotel (3 min).

What to know before you set off

The towpath is not a cycle path. The surface alternates between compacted gravel, beaten earth and plane-tree roots. Three practical consequences:

  • Road bike: no. A hybrid or mountain bike, with tyres of at least 35 mm.
  • After rain: it clags. The earth sections stay heavy for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Plane-tree roots create ridges. You ride at 12-15 km/h, not 25.

Add the cers, the prevailing westerly: it can push you along on the way out and punish you on the way back. Check its direction before choosing which way to go.

1. Around the Grand Bassin — 2.5 km, 30 min

The warm-up route, and the only one that is easy going the whole way. Seven hectares of water, boats manoeuvring, and a flat circuit under the plane trees. Suitable for children from 4-5 years and for trailers.

It is also the best way to understand why Riquet dug here: the basin served as a winter harbour and a turning basin, where long barges had to be able to come about.

2. To the Saint-Roch locks — 3 km return, 45 min

The route to do if you only do one.1.5 km of flat towpath to the four chambers of Saint-Roch, which make up about ten metres of height.

Put the bike down and watch. A boat takes around 40 minutes to work through the flight. You follow the manoeuvre step by step, gate by gate. The right slot: mid-morning or mid-afternoon, when the hire boats are moving.

3. To the Naurouze watershed — about 34 km return, 3 hr

The great classic. You follow the canal west to the point where the waters divide, at 189 metres: the summit from which water runs one way to the Atlantic and the other to the Mediterranean. It is the technical obstacle that nearly stopped the canal existing, and which Riquet solved by capturing the water of the Montagne Noire.

You pass several locks on the way — this is the section where the water staircase is clearest.

In practice: allow 3 hr with stops. Earth surface in places. Few water points: bring something to drink. The return is often into the cers.

Short version: turn back halfway, about 17 km return, 1 hr 30.

4. To Bram — about 44 km return, 4 hr

For fit cyclists. You follow the canal east to Bram, a village whose medieval centre of concentric rings — a circulade — is one of the clearest in Languedoc.

It is a genuine day out: 4 hr of riding, plus a lunch stop. The surface is uneven over several sections.

The trick that changes everything: ride it one way and come back by train. Bram and Castelnaudary are on the same regional line, and Castelnaudary station is 2.4 km from the hotel (5 min). Check the conditions for carrying bikes before you go.

And as far as Carcassonne?

About 45 km along the canal, which is a full day on a bike. It is doable, but it is long, and the surface does not improve.

Our view: Carcassonne is 34 minutes by car or 20 minutes by train from Castelnaudary. Keep the bike for the canal and take the train to the walled city — you will arrive fresh enough to visit the ramparts, which is not guaranteed after 45 km of plane-tree roots. See What to do in Carcassonne in one day.

The plane trees, and why the landscape changes

You will see bare sections, stumps and replanting. Canker stain, an incurable fungus, has forced the felling of tens of thousands of plane trees along the canal. Replanting is under way with a mix of resistant species.

This is not roadworks: it is the canal reinventing itself for the next century. Knowing it changes how you see the exposed stretches — and explains why some sections are far less shaded than others. Pack a cap and water accordingly.

Hiring a bike and setting off

Le Clos Fleuri is 3 minutes from the start. In practice, you can head out before breakfast for the circuit of the basin, or do Naurouze in the morning and be at the pool by 2 pm.

After the ride, the restaurant lets you recover over handmade cassoulet or duck breast from the Montagne Noire, without getting back in the car.

Bike hire operators and their terms change. Ask at reception or check with the Lauragais Audois Tourist Office.

The towpath is flat and traffic-free, so it is easy physically. But the surface alternates between compacted gravel, earth and plane-tree roots: a hybrid or mountain bike is needed, and a road bike is out of the question.
About 45 km, which is a full day. The car takes 34 minutes and the train around 20: to visit the walled city, the train makes more sense.
Yes. The circuit of the Grand Bassin (2.5 km) suits children from 4-5 years, and the ride to the Saint-Roch locks and back (3 km) from 6-7 years. Both start 3 minutes from Le Clos Fleuri.
The ride to the Naurouze watershed and back (about 34 km, 3 hr): it is the section where the canal makes most sense, with several locks and the point where the waters divide.

A hybrid or mountain bike with tyres of at least 35 mm. Plane-tree roots and earth sections make a road bike unsuitable.
